Sometimes, knowing the things you are not supposed to do is just as useful as knowing the things you are allowed to do. For example: What items will a pawn shop NOT buy? While pawn shops buy a wide array of items, there are some important exceptions.
What Items Will a Pawn Shop NOT Buy?
In a previous post, we took a closer look at some of the items you can pawn or sell at a pawn shop. Going through the list, you’ll notice that a pawn shop will buy many different types of items. However, there are some items that most pawn shops won’t buy.
1. Counterfeit Items
As we explained in our post about luxury handbags, pawn shops go out of their way to avoid counterfeit items. This applies not only to designer accessories, but to any branded item, including tools, watches, and musical instruments.
2. Pets
“Can I pawn my pet?” is a weird question, but it makes some sense when you consider that certain breeds of dogs or cats are really expensive. However, the answer is no, you can’t pawn pets or any animal in general. As a rule of thumb, if something is alive and you have to feed it, then a pawn shop won’t give you money for it.
3. Clothes or Shoes
Sanitary concerns aside, pawning or selling clothes and shoes usually isn’t worth it. Very special designer shoes or clothing may be an exception. But even in that case, many pawn shops will still refuse to buy those items. If you are interested in selling or pawning clothing items that are valuable, make sure to check with the pawn shop in advance to make certain that they are interested.
4. Homemade Items
Sure, you can place great sentimental value on a vase that your grandmother decorated by hand. But unless your grandma is a world-famous painter, a pawn shop won’t offer you money for it. The reason is that the value of most homemade items is purely personal, so there’s no real market for them.
